Mickey Mouse Monopoly

Walt Disney is a very powerful entity that shapes and cultures childhood worlds globally. It represents a world of fantasy, fun, innocence and magic. However, people may not see that Disney actually has gained control of our democracy and how people think since they shape young people's minds. Analysis of the themes and deeper meanings of Disney films enabled a further understanding on how Disney affects the young minds today. There are many issues that were discussed that promote negative and wrong perceptions of things that are planted in a child's mind.

Issues such as gender representations, racism, and consumer's culture that are indirectly promoted in the mainstream thinking manage to go on until now because Disney is a very huge company. Disney is basically everywhere and no one can escape that. There are many different movies such as Lady and the Tramp (1955), The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), The Lion King (1994), Mulan (1998), and many more that depicts certain issues that create bad image in children's minds about a certain topics. Depiction of gender representations in a movie such as Aladdin produces stereotypes for male and female characteristics. For example, a female stereotype would be a "submissive, dependent, anxious to please, emotional, nurturing, affectionate, gentle, understanding, sensitive, sacrificing, family-oriented, obsessed with physical appearance" woman (Pettit, n.d.). This creates a negative impact on a child's mind and motivates a child to think like these stereotypes.
